The Canonical Scripture: Act 1. 34

Sangje traveled from Copper Valley Village to Added Mountain (Iksan) County, stayed there for over a month, and then went to Immortals-Gathering (Hoeseon) Town. He stayed in the drawing room directly outside the house of Kim Bo-Gyeong who lived in the town. At the time, Bo-Gyeong told Sangje that his mother was seriously ill. Listening to him, Sangje said to him, "Tonight, emissaries from Myeongbu (offices of the afterworld) will break into the room to harm the patient while My emissaries look away. Therefore, do not leave the patient's room and make sure that one person stays awake all night, keeping an eye on her." Taking Sangje's advice, Bo-Gyeong and his family members took turns staying awake all night. However, after many days had passed, the family became increasingly sleep deprived and began to ignore Sangje's advice.

One night, when Bo-Gyeong fell asleep for just a moment while keeping guard over his mother, Sangje suddenly shouted out loud from the drawing room. Bo-Gyeong woke up with a start, and he saw that his mother had already passed away. It turned out that when Sangje had said 'My emissaries,' He was referring to the family members who were nursing the patient. Unfortunately, however, Bo-Gyeong and his family members did not realize what Sangje had meant.

상제께서 구릿골을 떠나 익산(益山)에 이르시고 그곳에서 월여를 보내시다가 다시 회선동(會仙洞)에 이르시니라. 이곳에 김 보경(金甫京)이 살고 있었는데 그의 집 외당에 상제께서 계셨도다. 이때 그는 모친의 위독함을 상제께 아뢰니라. 이를 들으시고 상제께서 그에게 가라사대 “오늘 밤은 명부사자(冥府使者)가 병실에 침입하여 나의 사자의 빈틈을 타서 환자를 해할 것이니 병실을 비우지 말고 꼭 한 사람이 방을 지키면서 밤을 새우라” 하시니라. 보경이 이르심을 좇아 가족 한 사람씩 교대로 잠자지 않고 밤을 새우기로 하고 가족들을 단속하였느니라. 여러 날이 계속되매 식구들이 졸음에 못 이겨 상제의 이르심을 잊어 갔도다. 이날 밤 보경이 깨어 방을 지키다가 깜박 잠에 빠졌던바 이때 상제께서 외당에서 급히 소리쳐 부르시니라. 그가 놀라 깨어 보니 벌써 모친은 운명하여 있었도다. 상제께서 말씀하신 나의 사자는 바로 병자를 간호하는 사람을 가리키신 것이로되 식구들이 그것을 깨닫지 못하였도다.
