The Canonical Scripture: Act 1.29

Sangje's holiness was growing in renown and word of Him had reached Summer-Cloud (Hawun) Hamlet as well. The parents-in-law of a man named Lee Seon-Gyeong lived there. Sangje visited Lee Seon-Gyeong's father-in-law and gave him an order: "Talk to your wife. You must discuss with her whether she can put all her efforts into sincerely and wholeheartedly preparing for a Reordering Work (Gongsa 公事) for 49 days." The man talked about it with his wife as Sangje had instructed him to do. His wife had also heard of Sangje's holiness, so she made a firm resolution and accepted His offer. After Sangje once again asked the man to have his wife pledge, He proceeded with the Reordering Work. The woman prepared for the Reordering Work by making a steamer (siru) of rice cake after combing her hair and bathing each day. However, she soon became exhausted by this repetitive task and began harboring resentment. That day, even though she burned through a whole bundle of firewood, the rice cake remained completely uncooked. The woman became terribly frustrated, and she did not know what to do next. Sangje called her husband and said, "Your wife has lost her resolution and is quite worried that the rice cake has not been cooked. Therefore, let her beg Me for forgiveness. I intend to pardon her, whereas the divine beings would have gone on punishing her." The husband told his wife what Sangje had said. She was startled and repentant, and, as instructed, she entered the drawing room (sarang-bang) and begged for His mercy. After doing this, she found the rice cake was well cooked when she opened the steamer in the kitchen. From that point on, she sincerely offered her dedication every day until the 49-day period had come to an end. At the end of the 49 days, when Sangje entered the kitchen Himself and praised her dedication, she regretted her inadequate devotion. Sangje consoled her by having her look at the magnificently colored clouds around the moon, which he assured her were evidence that her sincerity had impressed the divine beings.

상제의 신성하심이 하운동(夏雲洞)에도 알려졌도다. 이곳에 이 선경(李善慶)이란 자의 빙모가 살고 있었도다. 상제께서 주인을 찾고 “그대의 아내가 四十九일 동안 정성을 들일 수 있느냐를 잘 상의하라” 분부하시니라. 주인은 명을 받은 대로 아내와 상의하니 아내도 일찍부터 상제의 신성하심을 들은 바가 있어 굳게 결심하고 허락하니라. 상제께서 다시 주인에게 어김없는 다짐을 받게 하신 뒤에 공사를 보셨도다. 그 여인은 날마다 머리를 빗고 목욕재계한 뒤에 떡 한 시루씩 쪄서 공사 일에 준비하니라. 이렇게 여러 날을 거듭하니 아내가 심히 괴로워하여 불평을 품었도다. 이날 한 짐 나무를 다 때어도 떡이 익지 않아 아내가 매우 당황하여 어찌할 바를 모르고 있노라니 상제께서 주인을 불러 “그대 아내는 성심이 풀려서 떡이 익지 않아 매우 걱정하고 있으니 내 앞에 와서 사과하게 하라. 나는 용서하고자 하나 신명들이 듣지 아니하는도다”고 이르시니라. 주인이 아내에게 이 분부를 전하니 아내가 깜짝 놀라면서 사랑방에 나와 상제께 사과하고 부엌에 들어가서 시루를 열어보니 떡이 잘 익어 있었도다. 부인은 이로부터 한결같이 정성을 들여 四十九일을 마치니 상제께서 친히 부엌에 들어가셔서 그 정성을 치하하시므로 부인은 정성의 부족을 송구히 여기니 상제께서 부인을 위로하고 “그대의 성심이 신명에게 사무쳤으니 오색 채운이 달을 끼고 있는 그 증거를 보라”고 하셨도다.
